Design Trends: Traditional
A ‘traditional’ interior is recognisable for its dark wood furniture, durable fabric or leather upholstery on chairs. You’ll most likely find this in a pub.
The dark colours are ideal as they last longer by hiding spillages and stains. Along with the darker interior, you may also find low lighting and ‘vintage’ decoration to support the ‘traditional’ ambience.
The traditional pub design has been a popular choice for generations of pub landlords so we’re breaking down what goes into the traditional style and why. We will also share some ways you can make your traditional pub work harder for you.
Carpets or Dark Floors
One key trend within traditional pubs, particularly older ones, is the use of carpet instead of wooden flooring. You may also see this feature in family-friendly pubs. The carpet is typically darker in colour and patterned. This makes it easy to hide crumbs and stains that may occur over time.
One downside of carpet is that it holds smells for longer so the smell of spilt alcohol may last longer. It could also be harder to remove dropped food- especially if it has been stood on.
You could opt for darker wooden floors. This will help to keep the traditional feel but will last longer. It is easier to sweep, vacuum, and mop hard floors making spillages easier to deal with while avoiding the lingering smell of spilt alcohol. If you wanted an extra element of warmth you could invest in a rug.
Wooden and Upholstered Furniture
Wooden and upholstered furniture is popular in pubs. You may notice furniture with darker wood finishes and patterned or dark upholstered seating pads.
While simple wood furniture is easier to wipe clean, upholstered seating pads add an extra element of warmth and comfort to your pub. As well as this, the variation in textures and colours can make your interior more interesting.
Dark and patterned fabric won’t appear tarnished as quickly as plain light-coloured fabric as it hides stains and spillages much better.
Faux leather is also a good option as it is cost-effective, more resistant to staining, and easy to keep clean with a wipe-down.
Add To the Ambience
The ambience is a big part of the traditional style. This can be altered easily with low lighting- especially in the evenings. As well as vintage or antique decoration. Common decorative pieces are old, classic books with a vintage feel, vintage tankards, horse brasses and framed old photos of the local area.
These are typically things that have been carried through history much like the ‘traditional’ pub design has been.
